Joe Krazter, Managing Civil Engineer at the Metropolitan Water District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) and Adam Blumstein, Staff Civil Engineer at Burns & McDonnell, will present on the Natalie Creek Flood Mitigation Project. The goal of the project is to mitigate the effects of flooding along Natalie Creek to the extent practicable. The residents experience frequent over bank flooding and property damage. Natalie Creek is within the Little Calumet River Basin located in southwest Cook County, Illinois.
Alternative solutions to mitigate flooding included bank stabilization, expansion of existing detention basins, new detention basins (additional 190-acre-foot of storage), and expanded arch culverts. MWRDGC, as a result of public input, approved proceeding with improvements that will provide a 25-year storm event level of protection for an estimated construction cost of $7.7 million.
