2008 Golf Outing

How many engineers does it take to spend a pleasant spring morning in the great manicured outdoors, otherwise known as Oak Meadows golf course? On May 22, about 80 Chicago area engineers and engineers-to-be participated in the 14th Annual Section Golf Outing. The event was a huge success in pulling together the civil engineering community for a day of social relaxation. All told, 38 firms, organization, public entities, and academic institutions were represented either through sponsorships or golfers. The proceeds from the event are administered by the Section’s Minority Affairs Committee, which provides scholarships to area high school students who attend the Introduction to Engineering Program at the University of Notre Dame.

The golf outing committee would like to thank all who participated and supported this long-standing event which has become a treasured tradition within the Section, with particular recognition to the sponsors of the event.

This year, for the first time, the Committee sent special invitations to past winners of the scholarship to join in the fun as honorary guests. Two students, Adam Addams and Norman Thomas, both of whom attended the engineering camp in 2006 and just completed their freshman year in the engineering program at the University of Illinois, accepted the challenge and matched drives, chips, and putts with Illinois’ best. We’re glad they joined and we will continue to encourage participation of past winners.

Also, Dynasty Group, Inc. very generously trotted out their GPS units to measure with precision the longest ball competition, and provide the much needed accuracy and oversight for this hole event. We wanted to thank the surveyors for their time and dedication.

Overall, the 2008 Golf outing netted approximately $9,000, which, in addition to funding the scholarship program, is also used for outreach efforts that support minority youths and promote technical education with a focus on careers in engineering. The Minority Affairs Committee is grateful to the Section and the engineering community for its continued support.

Again, we are very happy for the success of this event, the breadth of participation, the nice weather (again), and great field of golfers that make it what it is. We look forward to continuing the Golf Outing next year and thereafter.
