President's Notes - from July/August 2008 Newsletter

by P. Kay Whitlock, PE, D.WRE, M.ASCE

Greetings, Our Infrastructure Report Card Committee has been establishing and populating the sub-committees. Please contact Bill Cussen or Abdul Khan if you are interested in helping. The Committee faces a challenging and very important job. In March, the Illinois Works Coalition effort was kicked off by Former Speaker, J. Dennis Hastert and SIU President Glenn Poshard. Illinois Works’ task was to define a public works program. They worked with leader groups statewide and have delivered a recommended plan to State leaders ion Springfield. Recent reports indicate that the efforts have stalled. ASCE Illinois Section members have been supporting this important program. Please respond to the outreach and key alerts and place calls when you are requested. Although a fully funded infrastructure program could not move quickly enough to avoid low grades on our report cards next spring; it would be great to get the report card and know that major portions of the needs were being addressed.

Thanks to the members and guests who supported our annual golf outing. The outing is our primary source of funding for the scholarships awarded through the Minority Affairs Committee. We must never underestimate the impact of that committee’s work. We learned this week of the success of one of the 2007 scholarship recipients to the Notre Dame Introduction to Engineering. After learning more about engineering, the student changed his focus to engineering. He graduated from high school this month and has been admitted to both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois. He has been offered scholarships to both schools. I expect to meet this young man again in a few years when he joins the Illinois Section as a fresh engineering graduate. We never know for sure how many lives we impact. This month we got proof positive of one. Thank you for your support.
